Beginner's Guide to Skincare
Starting a skincare routine can feel overwhelming. Walk into any beauty store or scroll through social media, and you'll find hundreds of products all claiming to be the secret to perfect skin. The truth is, healthy skin doesn't come from using dozens of products — it comes from using the right products consistently.
If you're new to skincare, this guide will help you build a simple routine, understand the correct order to apply your products, avoid common mistakes, and save money by focusing on what your skin actually needs.
Step 1: Keep Your Routine Simple
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is buying too many products at once. When you introduce several new products simultaneously, it's difficult to know what's helping — or what's causing irritation.
Instead, begin with these four essentials:
1. Cleanser
A gentle cleanser removes dirt, oil, sunscreen, and makeup without stripping your skin. Cleansing creates a clean foundation for the rest of your routine.
2. Moisturizer
Every skin type needs hydration — even oily skin. A good moisturizer helps strengthen your skin barrier, reduces irritation, and keeps your skin healthy.
3. Sunscreen (Morning Only)
If you only invest in one skincare product, make it sunscreen. Daily SPF protects against premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer while preserving the results of every other skincare product you use.
4. One Targeted Treatment
Once you've established a consistent routine, you can add one treatment based on your skin concerns, such as:
Vitamin C for brightening
Retinol for aging concerns
Salicylic acid for acne
Niacinamide to help calm redness and support the skin barrier
Hyaluronic acid for extra hydration
There's no need to use every trending ingredient. Choose one that addresses your primary concern and allow it time to work.
The Correct Order to Apply Your Skincare Products
Applying products in the proper order helps each one perform its best.
Morning Routine
Cleanser
Treatment serum
Moisturizer
Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
Evening Routine
Cleanser
Treatment product
Moisturizer
It's important to note that certain treatment products need to be used at a specific time of day. Ingredients like retinoids and many exfoliating acids (such as AHAs) are typically recommended for nighttime use because they can increase sun sensitivity. In contrast, antioxidants like vitamin C are often used in the morning to help protect against environmental damage, followed by sunscreen to shield your skin from UV exposure.
